What is Sheet Mulching

Sheet mulching (also called “sheet composting” or arborist chip mulch) is a layered application of organic material - typically aged arborist wood chips over a compostable base - applied in a ring around a tree’s root zone, extending out ideally to or beyond the drip line. Instead of the shallow 2-3” landscape mulch ring most people picture, this is a thicker, science-based application designed to rebuild soil structure and feed the tree’s root system the way a natural forest floor does.
